Kerri Husman, MD
Guest Faculty
Kerri is delighted and honored to be part of the FSS Faculty and offer in-person workshops in Iowa, and FSS online classes in the Central Time zone.
Kerri became interested in shamanism at the age of eight, but in spite of a direct connection to Mohawk ancestors through her grandmother, was told by family members that it wasn't possible because she didn’t belong to a tribe. After many health challenges and years of study and mastery of disciplines associated with the brain, she realized it was essential that she start Core Shamanism training. After having been drawn to the ethical and anthropological basis of this practice for years, and often visiting the FSS website, she began her training in 2018. (More about her story).
With the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, she has completed the Gold level certificate, including the Two-Week Shamanic Healing Intensive, the Three-Year Program of Advanced Initiations in Shamanism and Shamanic Healing, Harner Shamanic Counseling, and Advanced Shamanic Depossession Healing. She has also held monthly meetings since 2019 for her three-year graduate classmates, where deep questions about cases are discussed confidentially with seasoned practitioners.
Kerri states: “Now, I find myself in a dual role: part of my life involves wearing my medical doctor’s hat, prescribing medications, and making treatment recommendations. The other part consists of non-medical care, where I work with clients as a Core Shamanic practitioner. In this spiritual practice, benevolent and loving spirits work through me to address the spiritual aspects of the concerns that clients present.”
Shamanism informs all aspects of Kerri's life and work, even though psychiatric care and spiritual care are separate services. She hosts a free monthly online community circle for those who have completed Harner Shamanic Counseling, The Way of the Shaman, or The Shamanic Journey. She created this circle to help build confidence, skills, and community, and it brings her great joy to participate in this practice.
Kerri maintains an active shamanic healing practice. Separate from her shamanic practice, she also offers healing touch and coaching, and has an integrative psychiatric practice. She is especially interested in working with spiritual crises, also called spiritual emergence or emergencies.
Kerri Husman graduated from Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa in 1997 and continued her internship, residency, and fellowship at the University of Iowa. She is board-certified in general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. She is also certified in functional medicine from the Institute for Functional Medicine. She is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Iowa. You can view her Curriculum Vitae here.
Kerri also brings her spirit of volunteerism to many organizations, currently serving as the President of the Board of the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology, the North Central Regional Representative and Co-Facilitator of the Energy Psychology and Psychedelics Community of Practice, and serves as the Iowa Chapter of the Psychedelic Medicine Association Co-Facilitator, and maintains a monthly support group for Neurodynamic Breathwork Facilitators graduates from her cohort, all offering monthly case consultation and journal club. The theme of volunteerism is supporting ethical, competent care. When on the cutting edge of evidence-based treatment, we all are learning, and we need to be humble and willing to quickly pivot as more information becomes available, listen to critical voices, and continually improve our craft.
Kerri is the host of The Way of the Shaman® Podcast.
Student Feedback
"Kerri's style, approach and delivery were exceptional. Wonderful. Best workshop I've ever taken."
"Kerri was fantastic. She cared about every student. She was respectful to questions and gave positive feedback to all of us."
"Kerri was so well informed and organized. We made it through all of the material with plenty of time for practice, discussion and questions. I think most importantly, Kerri made sure we were in a safe environment and did an excellent job of holding sacred space so we were able to explore this new way of journeying."
