Indigenous Shamanisms Workshops Offered by Foundation for Shamanic Studies

In addition to the Foundation's Core Shamanism workshops and programs, we will periodically offer workshops in Indigenous Shamanisms. Students will have the opportunity to explore the ancient knowledge of specific cultures with carefully selected teachers. We hope this study will lead to greater respect for the knowledge of indigenous peoples and ultimately help to preserve and dignify this wisdom for future generations.

Students of shamanism are encouraged to begin their study with courses in Core Shamanism, with, at minimum, the FSS Basic Workshop. This will provide a solid foundation in the universal principles of shamanism, placing the indigenous practices in a broad fundamental context.

Please note that on rare occasions the dates and locations of scheduled programs may change, depending upon the availability of facilities and faculty. FSS reserves the right to change or cancel any program if necessary. In such cases, enrolled participants will be notified promptly and deposits refunded or applied to another program.

*All workshops are part of the core shamanism program, and were originated, researched, and developed by Michael Harner and are copyrighted, except for the five-day version Soul Retrieval Training and those listed under Shamanic Innovations.

Core shamanism consists of the universal, near-universal, or common principles and practices of shamanism not bound to any specific cultural group or perspective, as originated, researched, and developed by Michael Harner. Since the West overwhelmingly lost its shamanic knowledge centuries ago due to religious oppression, the Foundation’s programs in core shamanism are particularly intended for Westerners to reacquire access to their rightful spiritual heritage through quality workshops and training courses. Training in core shamanism includes teaching students to alter their consciousness through classic shamanic non-drug techniques such as sonic driving, especially in the form of repetitive drumming, so that they can discover their own hidden spiritual resources, transform their lives, and learn how to help others. Core shamanism does not focus on ceremonies, such as those of Native American medicine men and women, persons who do both shamanism and ceremonial work.
